These are words I never thought I’d string together, but I have actually been finding myself dreaming about owning a minivan.
As many of you probably remember, it was only one short week ago that I wrote about our need for a new car and about how sad I was at the prospect of driving a minivan around town. I always thought I’d be the Mom with the cool station wagon (don’t even get me started on why I think station wagons are cooler than minivans…a picture is worth a thousand words, so I’ll share these…).
Either that, or I’d be driving an awesome SUV that doesn’t necessarily provide much in the way of convenience for a pack of kids. Once again, I’m not entirely sure why this is what I’ve had in mind, but it is what it is.
That is, you see, until I had my aha moment.
I think it was exactly one week ago today when some Mom friends and I had a triple play date at the Zoo (3 moms, 2 of them pregnant, 7 kids running around…just wait until the 2 babies are out of the bellies!). Anyway, after trekking around the zoo for a couple hours with the kiddos we all walked out to our cars and before we even got to them, I looked over at the Mom with a minivan and with a simple press of a button, alllllll her doors magically opened up.
It was in that moment that a light bulb went off. I wanted one of those. No…I NEEDED one of those.
In that same moment, my feelings of jealousy skyrocketed as I walked around to each door on our car and manually unlocked them one by one and then haphazardly and completely awkwardly buckled each girl into their car seats. By the time one of my kids was in the car properly buckled, Kristi (the genius Mom with a minivan!) was long gone with her two kiddos. She had at least 3 minutes on me and in Mom/kid time, 3 minutes can mean the difference between falling asleep in the car (paired with missing naps completely at home) and getting home without snoozing in the car (paired with a glorious 2-3 hour nap window for the girls…and me…I mean, the girls…).
Long story short, ever since that moment I’ve been looking at minivans in a whole new light. Somehow, shockingly, I’m even starting to like the way they look…GASP!!! Those automatic doors must have really messed with my brain…
As we’re quickly approaching becoming a family of five, I must say this to my younger/less practical/kid-less self…you should never judge a Mom for choosing a minivan. Those are the Moms who know what’s up. I cannot wait to get my hands on a brand spanking new minivan and I’m going to drive that thing around like it’s the COOLEST car in the world. Because in this moment, at this stage in our lives, it will be the coolest, smartest, safest, most practical car for us.
And when the kids are all grown up and out of the house, that’s when I’ll get my fancy, sporty, awesome dream car (TBD).…for now, I’ll just keep dreaming of a minivan.
I’ll let you all know how much I love it in the next couple months!
