Our First Grill :: a Big Green Egg

Our lives as adults are officially coming together.

We’re married, we have kids, we have careers (and yes, mine as a full time stay at home Mom counts), and we FINALLY have a grill!  I’m not sure why I consider this to be such a monumental occasion, but it feels like an important milestone worth mentioning.  For as much as I cook, I can honestly say that I’ve never grilled anything in my entire life. That was always my Dad’s task (or my Mom’s) or something our friends were experts at.  But things are about to change.  Travis and I are about to become grilling masters because our first grill is a BEAST.

We are officially the extremely proud owners of a Big Green Egg.

It may have a funny name , but this sucker is all business.  You can literally make anything in the Big Green Egg :: the perfect steaks, incredible fish, delicious veggies, amazing pizzas, sweet pies (yes, I said pies), and the list goes on and on (check out some of their recipes here).

My parents have been loving their Big Green Egg since 2006 and every time they’ve made us something on that grill, we’ve dreamed of having outdoor space to install one of our own. Now that we finally have a back patio (and now that we can look forward to warmer weather in the coming months), we knew it was time to bite the bullet and buy an Egg.

Mac helped me assemble the Egg’s “nest” and we were off and running with our new toy.

While we’re only one day into our new adventures in cooking, I have to say that this is one of the best items we’ve ever purchased.

Our first meal?  Dry Aged, Boneless Rib-Eye (extra marbled) with grilled asparagus on the side (recipe to come).

It was heaven on earth. Travis dominated his first attempt at grilling on the Egg and I think we both did a pretty great job of participating in the “clean plate club” (side note :: a big “thank you” to my parents who took our 15 calls last night and helped our first meal turn out perfectly!).

My goal is to document our learning experiences with the Big Green Egg and share recipes that work for us. That way, we’ll have some recipes to reference and you’ll read about all the reasons you should purchase a Big Green Egg as well!

Let the grilling begin…

Consider expectations duly raised, friend, you’re setting the bar high with this one. 😉 I’ve never heard of the big green egg, but I’ll eat just about anything that comes off of a grill. Exciting purchase!
