So much has changed not only in the past month, but in the past 5 days. After nearly 5 months of terrible sleep (sleep that kept getting worse and worse by the day), we’re finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel and we’re finally beginning to feel “human” again. In large part, I have my wonderful sister-in-law to thank for our new found sleep. I also have to contribute some of this to my husband for supporting me in our recent decisions. And honestly, I must give myself some credit for going through a few of the hardest nights of my life…
Long story short, we’ve been allowing our lovely Mackenzie Marie to cry it out. The official term is the “Extinction” method (which makes it sound a little less cruel than crying it out). We learned about the method in a book called Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, and this is the book my sister-in-law recommended. Thanks, Malinda!!!
I will write another post about this book in more detail, but let’s just say that in the past 5 days we’ve gone from waking ever 1.5-2 hours with Mackenzie, to enjoying 6 and 8 hour stretches of sleep. I can’t even begin to tell you how this has improved our lives, our spirits, our moods, and even our complexions (I swear some of my new “second baby wrinkles” are disappearing…and that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but at least I FEEL like I’m looking more rested)!
Yay for more sleep! It’s best for Mac and it’s best for Mommy and Daddy. I think it goes without saying that I would highly recommend this book for any soon-to-be-parents who value sleep and for any parents who have kids that are struggling with a good night’s rest.
Along with the exciting sleep development we’ve been enjoying, Mackenzie has sprouted two teeth in the past three weeks. So far, knock on wood, she hasn’t bitten me nearly as often as her sister did.
She also decided that now is the perfect time to sit up, unassisted. She started two days ago and she’s a pro at it already (well, a pro for being 5 months, I suppose).
She continues to be the happiest little lady ever and she grows more and more in love with her sister on a daily basis. Last night when I was making some delicious homemade pasta sauce, I was able to enjoy Abby and Mac giggling with each other while Abby played peek-a-boo with her little sister. As my Dad said the other day, they’re going to be “thick as thieves.” I agree 100%.
Okay, so now before I get to the new pictures, let’s take a little walk down memory lane.
