One of my favorite parts about it has always been the fact that as you travel through it, your role in it evolves.
You start out as a baby. A son or a daughter. Maybe a sister or a brother. And then things get even more interesting…
As you get older, you become an athlete or a business person or maybe an artist on top of all the other roles you’ve assumed along the way.
For me, I always looked forward to the day when some of my roles included girlfriend turned fiance turned wife turned Mom. I can now check those boxes along with sister, daughter, granddaughter, cousin, niece, etc…
But there’s always room for new roles. That’s what life is all about. And the one role I’ve been looking forward to the most since May 10th, 2008 (when two people I love said “I do”) is the role of Aunt…Auntie Ali to be precise (has a nice ring to it, right?). And guess what? I get to check that box now too.
I’m pretty sure I haven’t been more excited since I found out I was pregnant with my own little love muffin. I actually cried when my brother called and said, “guess who decided to go and get pregnant?” (only my brother could deliver baby news in such a perfectly unique way)
I cried yet again yesterday when we got the news that my little niece or nephew was going to be a niece. A wonderfully intelligent, absolutely beautiful little baby girl from the inside, out (trust me, I can already tell).
The best part about all this news (other than the fact that as Auntie Ali, I’ll get to spoil my little niece and my daughter will have a new best friend)?
The fact that my brother and sister-in-law will get to check off a few new boxes as well – the best boxes in the world as Daddy and Mommy. And let me tell you, I don’t think I could dream up two better people to check off those boxes and assume those new roles. My niece is going to be the most loved and most supported (not to mention most likely to attend Stanford) little baby outside of California (where in my humble opinion, Abigail currently holds all those titles).
I could go on and on but for now, I just wanted to share this absolutely wonderful news.
Congratulations to my brother and sister-in-law and thank you for my new role as Auntie Ali – I can’t wait to meet her, hug her and tell her that she’s the luckiest baby I know.
